First Steps
Directly after diagnosis but before a baby or child has been fitted with hearing aids can be a difficult time. Many parents report feeling shocked and helpless, unable to help their child while they wait for the required tests to take place. During this time there are several things you can do to have a positive effect on your child’s hearing while also helping yourself feel more in control.
Continue to talk to your child. No matter how old your child is or the degree of his or her hearing loss, continue to talk, sing age-appropriate songs and play finger games just as you would with any other child. Bring your face close to your child’s when you speak and use lots of facial expression. This is both a valuable bonding time, and an opportunity to reinforce the importance of facial contact.
Keep a journal. Writing down your feelings and emotions during this time, as well as recording observations about your child’s development serve two purposes. It’s an excellent outlet for you during a time that can be stressful. It also provides you and your child’s hearing healthcare professional with a review of the progress your child is making.
